Update On Modern Industrial Building…………

Well I didn’t get the scalescenes T009 Modern Industrial Building finished like I thought I might do at the weekend, but I did get quite a lot done. It is all coming together quite nicely. I’m pleased that I eventually decided not to build a long line of the of the sheds, as I think it might have been a little fragile.
I was having a bit of a problem trying to secure the roof supports to the walls, as I had tidied away all my small clamps, and I couldn’t for the life of me find them.

I think that I may have to invest in another set of these small clamps as I just about had enough. They were not expensive, in fact I think I got them off of Ebay for a couple of pounds for sixteen. They are worth their weight in gold when you run out of hands.

Once the main structure was glued and clamped, I set it aside to dry and I then started on the overhead gantry crane that runs the length of the shed. But I have a confession to make. I was so carried away making it, I forgot to take some pictures of the build, and I’m sure not going to take it apart to start again. I did manage to remember to take some pictures of it all finished.

I know, I know, I made another mistake. One of the beams should have been put on the other way round, so that the SWL info was on the outside of the crane.
IMG_0292
I didn’t notice until it was all finished and all glued up, so it  will just have to stay like that.
I cut out all of  the roof sections and got the glued up, but I haven’t put them in place just yet, as I might just leave them loose so that they can be removed to see the inside. It is not going onto Wynyard Lane as it is too modern, so it is destined  to be an exhibition piece for the office at the docks.
In order to lift the coils that I intend to fill the shed with, the crane is going to have a coil crab made. This shouldn’t be much of a problem, as the kit comes with a spreader beam that I intend to modify to look something like this…..

Once the crane is finished, I’m going to make some coils.

T009 Modern Industrial Building…………

As promised I have sorted the pictures out, that I have so far, for the T009 Modern Industrial Building from scalescenes. As I mentioned in my previous post, I have ditched the idea of try to replicate a warehouse we have at the docks. It was a task far bigger than I am capable of. So I am just going to build the standard kit. Should be a doddle now then!!

This now, is so simple. Great big pieces to cut out and only one window, WHOOO HOOO.

IMG_0260

Just a case of laminating backs to fronts for the top and bottom sections, and there is some very fine strips called “girts” that go on the inside walls of the building.

IMG_0261

Once the all of the sections are made up, it’s just a case of marrying the tops to the bottoms.

IMG_0273IMG_0274

Once all four walls are built, you have the choice of where you want to put the door or doors. There are three styles of door to choose from. One is a large roller shutter door. The second is a smaller version of roller shutter door and the third is a loading dock option. The one I opted for was the first one. To enable you to place the door where ever you want on the structure, you are supplied with a couple of simple but effective templates. Just simply choose where the door is to be and the draw round with a sharp pencil. then cut out with your sharp knife.

IMG_0267          IMG_0268

IMG_0279

Now that you have a hole, you need to trim it with the relevant trim and make the roller shutter door.It tidy’s the edges quite nicely and the door can be made to be either open, closed or in what ever position you require it in. For my scenario, it will be in the up position, so that you will be able to see the steel coils inside the shed.

Now comes the fiddly bit that, which was one of the reasons I didn’t go with the big build. They are no hard to cut out, I sometimes find it quite therapeutic but, when you have hands and fingers like mine, the thought of having to cut out about twenty eight sets of these made me nervous.

IMG_0266

The little yellow bit is for the support for the rail which the gantry crane will eventually run along.

I don’t think it is going to take me much longer to complete this build, as I now have all of the supports done. The roof is pretty much straight forward. So hopefully I might get it finished this weekend.

Until Next Time…………..

Modern Steel Coil Shed………..

Just a quick update on whereabouts I am with the construction of the scalescenes T009 Modern Industrial Building. The plan was to have a go at my first “modified” building. I was going to try and replicate one of the steel coil sheds we have where I work at the docks. This, I hoped, might have been good enough to to maybe sit in main office reception. Well I’m afraid it’s proving to be a lot harder than I had anticipated. I thought I had nothing more to do than to join about three of the buildings together, then make some replica steels coils out of dowel to fill up the shed. WRONG!! If I had actually thought about what I wanted to do, I would have realised that it would not be that simple. In the first instance, to achieve the correct scale, or somewhere near, it would have taken five buildings joined together to make one long shed. This in it’s self would have been a mammoth task, taking into consideration all of the detail that goes along with a scalescenes building. Just the roof supports would have taken me an age to do all twenty. Then there would be the coils. Again, it sounded like a good idea when it was swimming around in my pea sized brain. I got a photograph of one of the steel coils, taken end on. As they are wrapped in hardboard, I thought I could use wooden dowel and print out the side on view of the coils onto round sticky dots. Sounds good doesn’t it. That’s what I thought. So I got my wife Jak to shrink and scale the image of the coil so that I could use it on the dots on the side of the coils. (This looked brilliant by the way.) They would have been perfect, if it wasn’t for the fact that there would have been over four hundred to do!! I would have still been doing these when I was picking up my old age pension. Next, the fact that the steel coil shed is not a stand alone structure. It is part of a “L” shaped configuration. To achieve this, it would have taken another two buildings joined on the end to make the “L”. I am now thinking I may have bitten of more than I can chew. No doubt it would have looked very impressive, but I think I may have a lot more to do for myself on Wynyard Lane, than trying to be too ambitious  and do something that is way out of my league.

I’m still going to finish building the T009 Modern Industrial Building, but I’m going to stick to the original design. I still intend to fill it with steel coils, but not four hundred of them. I have started it, but I can’t show you the pictures of it in this post, as I’m sitting writing this on my computer at work and I have no access to my latest photo’s on this PC. I will get them sorted on my laptop tonight and hopefully I might get them posted sometime this week, as I’m not very busy at work this next couple of weeks due to holidays (don’t tell the boss!!)

Until Next Time………….

Completed Small Engine Shed…….

Well everything went to plan and I managed to got the Small Engine Shed finished. I must admit I’m very pleased with the result. Once again there is loads of detail inside that no one but you and I will ever see.

First of all I built the vents that fit in the roof to exhaust the smoke from the building. I forgot to take a picture of the second one, but it is the same as this one only half the size.

IMG_0230

IMG_0257        IMG_0255

I couldn’t help myself on this build and I have done something that I have never done before. Most of the scalescenes models come with graffiti, but I feel that it is a little to modern for my liking. So I drew from my dark and murky memory and remembered they type of graffiti I used to see on buildings back then. I’m afraid it wasn’t very artistic, but it wasn’t back in the day.

IMG_0232

I know it’s not very creative, but I’m the only one that will know it’s there.

IMG_0253

Above the roof exhaust is the chimneys.

IMG_0233        IMG_0234

Next comes the water tank. Not much to explain about the tank, as it is basically a box. But with the addition of panels it looks quite effective.

IMG_0235        IMG_0239

IMG_0241

Finally, all that was left to do was the doors. These are very similar to the doors that I built for the Farm House Barn. Two layers of 200gsm card back to back, with the addition of battens stuck on the back.

IMG_0240

So, here it is in all it’s glory.

IMG_0245       IMG_0246

IMG_0248       IMG_0250

And maybe one more money shot.

IMG_0252

Next I think I might be making a project for the Dock Company where I work. We have modern warehousing and we import and export  various cargoes. Scalescenes do a Modern Industrial Building that I might be able adapt so it will look like ours. Could be fun.

Until Next Time…………

Small Engine Shed…………..

The latest release from scalescenes is the R021a Small Single Road Engine Shed. It’s a versatile little kit that can be built in a number of different ways. It can be built with or without the water tank, windows or solid walls and no windows, solid back wall or doors, and with six different wall textures, the options are endless.

I opted for the Random Ashlar wall option, the windows, the doors and the water tank.

I started by building the side walls with the cut outs for the windows.

IMG_0189         IMG_0190

I even got all arty and coloured in under the header stones.

IMG_0192

When I came to do the windows, I must have sat for an hour cutting out half of the eighty windows. cussing and swearing as I was cutting through the window frames. Then I realised that there was a sheet of dirty windows to print onto transparency. Happy days!

IMG_0194

So effective.

IMG_0196

The end walls come next. Double thickness, with the inner section making the drain pipe.

IMG_0218         IMG_0220

The roof trusses are next. I like building these. They are strangely satisfying when finished. Very delicate, but so effective.

IMG_0222

IMG_0226

Like the roof trusses, I find the tiling of the roof very therapeutic, and if you take your time and layout all of the strips of tiles in the right order, the effect of weathering is excellent.

IMG_0225          IMG_0229

That’s the stage I’m up to now. Hopefully tomorrow night I have no plans to go anywhere or do anything, so I will be able to get this little gem from scalescenes finished.

Until Next Time…………….
